Simple Tips to Attract Hummingbirds to Your Yard

Throughout the warmer months, many backyards play host to a variety of birds, including hummingbirds. When you see flowers and trees begin to bud and bloom and other migrating birds, like warblers, that’s nature’s way of letting you know it’s time to ready your yard for hummingbirds.

It’s enchanting watching hummingbirds – named for the humming sound of their fast-flapping wings – as their tiny size and speed make them natural wonders. Hummingbirds can fly 25-30 miles per hour, flapping their wings an estimated 70 times per second. They fly in every direction, even backwards, which only hummers can do, and float majestically in midair.

I Remember Mom: Hold Dear to Heart, Thy Precious Family Photographs

By Richard Mabey Jr.

Framed photographs that are placed in a living room, dining room, or bedroom hold a most magical and charming quality. I first became aware of the magnificent positive power of framed photographs when I was just five years old. Just about every weekend, Mom, Dad, my sister Patti, and I would visit my Great Grandma Mabey, Dora Dolson Mabey, at the old Mabey Homestead in Lincoln Park. Great Grandma had framed pictures abounding throughout her home. Even at such a young age, I was amazed at how it seemed that the entire Dolson and Mabey family history came to life in the living room, the formal parlor, the dining room, the kitchen, and even unto the big L-shaped enclosed front and side porch.

I think that framed pictures that hang upon the walls of a home, or are placed atop furniture, take on a certain quality and magic all their own. It is a way of keeping the endearing memory of loved ones alive in heart, mind, and soul.

New RHA maps show where wells were contaminated

What’s in your drinking water? The nonprofit Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA) is making it easier to find out!

Four out of five households – 80 percent – in the upper Raritan River watershed in Hunterdon, Somerset, and Morris counties get drinking water from a private well on their property. The only way for well owners to know if their water is safe and healthy is by testing it.

Since 1974, Raritan Headwaters Association has offered well testing at discounted rates through a certified laboratory. But it’s up to homeowners to choose exactly which substances to test for – which can be confusing without knowledge of potential risks.

I Remember Mom: Never Too Late!

By Richard Mabey Jr.

My mom, Janet Kemmerer Mabey, began attending college at County College of Morris when she was in her early forties, in the early part of the 1970’s. At the same time, Mom was looking out for the safety of the children of Lincoln Park, serving as a Crossing Guard. Mom would cross the children, walking to school, at the corner of Clover Lane and Main Street. After her morning time at her post was completed, Mom would either drive to CCM to attend classes or study and do homework.

Tree Talk: 4 Tips for Planting Trees

(Family Features) Trees are virtually everywhere you turn, from your own backyard to nearby parks and forests where you enjoy hiking. They provide shade and beauty, and some even bear fruit. A compelling and ever-growing body of evidence generated by scientists, health care professionals, conservationists, humanitarians and both public and private corporations supports the critical importance of trees and their impact on the human condition. Trees filter pollutants out of the air and water and provide protection for people and communities from dangerous heat and flooding. They lower urban temperatures, reduce energy bills and sequester carbon to slow the rate of climate change.

I Remember Mom: Hold Dear To Heart, The Old Rock Wall

By Richard Mabey Jr.

In the early 1920’s, my maternal grandfather, Edmund C. Kemmerer began building a rock wall that would eventually run along the front yard of his entire home on the 600 block of Boonton Avenue. Grandpa worked for himself, as an electrician. In his spare time, he worked earnestly and diligently on building this incredible rock wall.

My grandfather did have the help of some neighbors, now and then. Specifically, Mr. Hill who lived in the stately home directly across the street. And, Grandpa also had help building his rock wall from Mr. Baker, who lived right next to Grandpa, on the right-hand side of the Kemmerer Homestead.

I Remember Mom: So Dear and Precious Be Thy Talent and Divine Gift

It was during the classes on writing children’s stories that my mom, Janet Ethel Kemmerer, did shine like a glistening diamond. Mom absolutely loved writing little children’s stories. I know I may be prejudiced in reporting this, but Mom truly was one of the absolute best students in the entire class. It was a relatively large class of about 40 students.

I Remember Mom: Hold Dear To Heart, Thy Courageous Faith

By Richard Mabey Jr.

Can an old board, a little stream, and the surroundings of forest trees and thistle growing wild, bring a kind, gentle, elderly woman back in time; from whence she was once a little girl with a vast and infinite imagination and an immense love of nature?

One of my mom’s older sisters, Mabel Kemmerer Bay, always held a great love and respect for nature. Aunt Mabel lived in a woodsy section of Montville. She was a very wise woman and had a great respect and appreciation for the Native American blood that flowed through her veins. My grandmother’s grandmother was a Native American.

I Remember Mom: Hold Dear To Heart, A Joyous Spirit

By Richard Mabey Jr.

I was always amazed how my mom, Janet Kemmerer Mabey, kept such a wonderfully joyous and happy spirit through tough times. Mom endured three major brain surgeries. The first of which took over six hours. Mom managed to keep a smile on her face through it all.

Mom loved children. Mom understood children in a very innate, inborn, spiritual way. For well over 20 years, Mom served as a Crossing Guard for the children of Lincoln Park. Mom made sure that the children safely crossed the street on their way to school and on their way home after school.

Mom earned an Associate’s Degree in psychology, at County College of Morris. She took a significant number of courses that focused on child psychology. Mom had always wanted to be a kindergarten teacher. Her dream was curtailed when she was diagnosed with having four brain aneurysms.

After all, this is the place where you can be the hostess with the mostest, ready to mix up some margs at a moment’s notice or mingle late into the night by firelight. Patio and outdoor spaces can be tricky to style and decorate, which is why Big Lots has created a step-by-step guide to deck out your backyard this summer.

(BPT) – If you’ve got wedding bells in your future, chances are you also have a million things to do before the big day. Is your garden thriving? Thank a breeder!

(BPT) – Today you don’t need to be a horticultural expert to grow tasty tomatoes, mouth-watering watermelon or fragrant lilacs. Advances in breeding over the past decade have resulted in plants that are easier for home gardeners to grow. They are more disease resistant, weather tolerant and prolific than ever before. “These researchers are dedicated to developing varieties that grow well in our various climates and perform better than the varieties from the past. They’re focusing on new plants that can bring more to the garden: more flowers, more fruits, more disease resistance, all in convenient sizes for today’s garden,” says Diane Blazek, executive director at National Garden Bureau (NGB). “Many of NGB’s Year Of plant selections have seen major breeding improvements in the last few years and that’s why we chose them. It’s an exciting time for all gardeners.”

To help keep dogs, cats and other pets safe during summer adventures, consider these tips from the experts at VCA Animal Hospitals, which has more than 1,000 locations across North America that cared for more than 4.5 million pets last year.

Fresh Summer Salsa
